FRAME SIZE FOR AN 18×24 POSTER

The 18×24 inch poster (45.7×61 cm) is a popular medium-large format that slots neatly between 16×24 and 24×36. It is commonly used for art prints, photography, and advertising posters. The extra 2 inches of width compared to 16×24 give the image more presence without requiring a significantly larger wall space. Without a mount, you need an 18×24 inch frame. With a 2.5-inch mount border, the frame becomes 23×29 inches. The calculator below handles any mount width you choose.

WHERE TO HANG AN 18×24 POSTER

An 18×24 inch print fills a similar role to 16×24 but with a bit more visual weight. It works above two-seater sofas, over console tables in hallways, and as a single statement piece in a bedroom. In a dining room, two 18×24 prints side by side with a 10 cm gap between them create a clean diptych effect. The pair spans about 100 cm, which suits a wall section behind a four-seater dining table. In a home office, an 18×24 print behind your desk chair adds colour and personality to video calls. Hang the centre at about 145 cm from the floor for standing eye level, or 120 cm if you are mostly seated. This size also works well leaning on a mantelpiece or a deep shelf, propped against the wall at a slight angle.

FRAMING TIPS

An 18×24 print pairs well with a medium moulding (20–30 mm). At this size, the frame is large enough to benefit from a slightly wider moulding without it looking chunky. Natural wood tones (oak, walnut, beech) suit photography and fine art prints, while black or white frames work for graphic posters and illustrations. If you are hanging two prints as a pair, match the frame finish exactly.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between 18×24 and 16×24?
An 18×24 poster is 2 inches wider than a 16×24 poster. Both are 24 inches tall. The aspect ratio differs: 18×24 is 3:4, while 16×24 is 2:3. An 18×24 print will not fit in a 16×24 frame — it is too wide.
Can I use a 20×28 frame for an 18×24 poster?
Only if you add a mount. A 20×28 frame has 1 inch of space on each side and 2 inches on top and bottom — that is an uneven mount border, which looks off. For a clean result, either use an 18×24 frame without a mount, or calculate the correct frame size for your preferred mount width using our tool above.
Is 18×24 a standard frame size?
Yes, 18×24 is a widely available standard frame size in the UK and US. You will find ready-made frames at most high-street shops and online. It is one of the more common poster formats alongside 16×24 and 24×36.
