FRAME SIZE FOR A 24×36 POSTER

The 24×36 inch poster (61×91 cm) is the classic large-format standard — the size used for movie posters, concert prints, and statement wall art. At this scale, the print commands attention on its own and a mount is entirely optional. Most people frame 24×36 posters without a mount for a clean, modern look. Without a mount, you need a 24×36 inch frame. With a 3-inch mount border (recommended at this scale), you will need a 30×42 inch frame. Use the calculator below to check the dimensions for your preferred mount width.

WHERE TO HANG A 24×36 POSTER

A 24×36 inch print is a feature piece. Hang it where it can anchor a room: above a queen or king bed headboard, over a three-seater sofa, or on a large blank wall in an open-plan living space. The bottom of the frame should sit about 15–20 cm above any furniture below it. On a bare wall with no furniture, centre the print at eye level — roughly 145 cm from the floor to the centre of the frame. This size also works well at the end of a long corridor or in an entrance hall, where it creates a focal point as you walk in. Avoid hanging a 24×36 print in very small rooms (under 10 square metres) or above narrow furniture like bedside tables, where it will look disproportionately large. The wall section should be at least 90–100 cm wide to give the frame breathing room on both sides.

FRAMING TIPS

At 24×36, the frame moulding can afford to be substantial — 25–40 mm wide works well without competing with the artwork. A thin frame at this scale can look flimsy. Black aluminium frames are popular for large-format posters: they are light (easier to hang), rigid, and relatively affordable. Solid wood frames look more premium but add significant weight — make sure your wall fixings can handle it. Use two hooks spaced 30 cm apart rather than a single centre hook for stability.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What frame do I need for a 24×36 poster without a mount?
You need a frame with a 24×36 inch (61×91 cm) inner opening. This is the most common way to frame large posters. The outer frame dimensions depend on the moulding width — budget frames typically have a 20–25 mm moulding, adding about 2 inches to each dimension.
Do I need a mount for a 24×36 poster?
Not usually. At this size, the print already dominates the wall and a mount adds considerable bulk to the overall frame size. A 3-inch mount border pushes the frame to 30×42 inches, which needs a very large wall. Most people go without a mount at 24×36. If you do want one, use a wider border (2.5–3 inches) to keep the proportions balanced.
Is 24×36 the same as A1?
No. A 24×36 inch poster is 61×91.4 cm, while A1 is 59.4×84.1 cm. The 24×36 is both wider and taller than A1. A 24×36 poster will not fit in an A1 frame. They are different standards — 24×36 is a US/international format, while A1 is ISO 216.
