FRAME SIZE FOR A 4×6 PHOTO

The 4×6 inch photo (10.2×15.2 cm) is the classic snapshot size — the default print format from photo labs and home printers. On its own, it is too small for a wall display, but with a mount and a well-chosen frame, a 4×6 print becomes a charming personal piece. A mount is essential at this size: without one, the framed piece looks like a passport photo stuck to the wall. Without a mount, you need a 4×6 inch frame. With a 2-inch mount border, the frame becomes 8×10 inches. Use the calculator below for any mount width.

WHERE TO DISPLAY A 4×6 PHOTO

A 4×6 print belongs in personal, close-up spaces. Desks, bedside tables, mantelpieces, and bookshelves are the natural homes for this size. For wall display, group several 4×6 prints together in matching frames to create a photo wall — a grid of six or nine creates a cohesive display that fills a meaningful area. Space the frames 3–5 cm apart for a tight, curated grid. Picture ledges work brilliantly for 4×6 prints: line up five or six framed photos on a shelf, overlapping slightly, for a casual, changeable arrangement. In a hallway, a horizontal row of family photos at eye level adds warmth without requiring large prints. Always use a mount at this size — a 2-inch border doubles the visual footprint and gives the image gravitas.

We do not sell 4×6 prints, but our 8×12 inch posters (from £19.99) are the perfect step up from photo size — large enough for wall display with or without a mount.

FRAMING TIPS

At 4×6, the frame itself becomes a significant part of the visual. Choose a frame that complements the photo: simple wooden frames for family snapshots, sleek black or white frames for black-and-white photography. Multi-aperture frames (with cut-outs for several 4×6 prints in one mount) are a space-efficient way to display a collection. White mounts are standard; cream mounts work well with warm-toned or vintage-style photos.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What frame do I need for a 4×6 photo with a mount?
With a standard 2-inch mount border, you need an 8×10 inch frame. The mount opening will be 3.5×5.5 inches (the photo minus 0.25 inches of overlap per side). This is the most common 4×6 framing configuration.
Is 4×6 the same as 10×15?
Nearly. A 4×6 inch photo is 10.2×15.2 cm, while the metric equivalent often sold in Europe is 10×15 cm. The difference is about 2 mm — close enough that a 10×15 cm frame will fit a 4×6 print with a tiny bit of play. For a precise fit, buy the frame that matches your actual print dimensions.
Can I put a 4×6 photo in a 5×7 frame?
Only with a mount. A 5×7 frame has 0.5 inches of extra space on each side and the same on top and bottom. You can cut a mount with a 0.5-inch border to fill the gap, but the border will be very narrow. A better approach is to use a larger frame (8×10 or similar) with a proper 1.5–2 inch mount border.
