FRAME SIZE FOR A 5×7 PHOTO

The 5×7 inch photo (12.7×17.8 cm) is a step up from the standard 4×6 snapshot. It is the go-to size for portrait photography, school photos, event prints, and greeting cards. At 5×7, you are at the threshold where a print can work on a wall — just about — provided you add a decent mount. Without a mount, a 5×7 frame is too small to notice on anything but a desk or shelf. Without a mount, you need a 5×7 inch frame. With a 2-inch mount border, the frame becomes 9×11 inches. The calculator below works out any mount width you choose.

WHERE TO DISPLAY A 5×7 PHOTO

A 5×7 print straddles the line between desk display and wall art. On a desk or shelf, it works without a mount in a simple stand-up frame. For wall display, always add a mount — a 2–2.5 inch border brings the framed piece up to about 9×11 or 10×12 inches, which is large enough to register on a wall. Group three or four 5×7 prints in a horizontal row along a hallway for a family photo timeline. In a bedroom, a single framed 5×7 portrait on the bedside table is a classic touch. Picture ledges suit this size perfectly: lean four or five framed prints side by side, mixing portrait and landscape orientations for variety. In a bathroom, a single 5×7 print in a water-resistant frame adds warmth above a shelf or towel hook.

FRAMING TIPS

5×7 frames are widely available from high-street shops, supermarkets, and online. For a premium look, choose a solid wood frame with a pre-cut mount — many 5×7 frames come with a mount included. Silver and gold metallic frames are popular for portrait photos and gifts. For a modern look, slim black or white frames with a generous white mount keep things clean. Multi-aperture frames that hold several 5×7 prints are a great option for displaying wedding or event photos together.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What frame do I need for a 5×7 photo with a mount?
With a 2-inch mount border, you need a 9×11 inch frame. With a 2.5-inch border, you need a 10×12 inch frame. The mount opening will be 4.5×6.5 inches (the photo minus 0.25 inches of overlap per side).
Is 5×7 the same as A5?
No, but they are close. A 5×7 inch photo is 12.7×17.8 cm, while A5 is 14.8×21 cm. A5 is about 2 cm wider and 3 cm taller. A 5×7 print will be loose in an A5 frame. For a proper fit, buy a 5×7 frame.
Should I frame a 5×7 photo in portrait or landscape?
Match the orientation of the image. Portrait photos (taller than wide) go in portrait frames. Landscape photos (wider than tall) go in landscape frames. If your frame has a stand, check it supports both orientations. Most 5×7 frames have a fold-out stand that works either way.
