FRAME SIZE FOR AN 8×10 PHOTO

The 8×10 inch photo (20.3×25.4 cm) is the standard size for professional portrait photography, headshots, and fine art photo prints. It is large enough to display on a wall without a mount, though adding one elevates the presentation considerably. 8×10 is also the traditional size for signed celebrity photos and autographed prints. Without a mount, you need an 8×10 inch frame. With a 2.5-inch mount border, the frame becomes 13×15 inches. Use the calculator below for any mount width.

WHERE TO HANG AN 8×10 PHOTO

An 8×10 print is a solid mid-size piece that works in most rooms. Above a desk, it makes a strong personal statement — hang it at seated eye level (about 110 cm from the floor). In a living room, use 8×10 prints as part of a gallery wall arrangement, mixing them with larger pieces (16×20 or 11×14) as anchors. Three 8×10 prints in a horizontal row with 5 cm gaps span about 75 cm — ideal for the wall above a console table or sideboard. In a hallway, a vertical column of 8×10 prints creates a strong visual rhythm. Bedrooms suit this size well: a single framed 8×10 portrait on the wall beside the bed or above a dressing table. The size also works on mantlepieces and deep shelves, leaned against the wall at a slight angle.

FRAMING TIPS

8×10 frames come in every style and material. For professional headshots and portraits, choose a classic frame — dark wood, black, or silver — with a white or off-white mount. For fine art photography, a slim black frame with a wide white mount (3 inches) creates a gallery feel. Avoid ornate or decorative frames that compete with the image. If you are framing a signed photo or print, use acid-free mount board to prevent the autograph from fading.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is 8×10 the same as A4?
No. An 8×10 inch photo is 20.3×25.4 cm, while A4 is 21×29.7 cm. A4 is wider and significantly taller. An 8×10 print will be slightly loose widthwise and too short for an A4 frame. Use the correct frame size for your print.
What mount width works best for 8×10?
A 2–2.5 inch (5–6.5 cm) mount border is ideal for 8×10. This brings the framed piece to about 12×14 or 13×15 inches — a comfortable size for wall display. For a more dramatic gallery effect, go up to 3 inches for a 14×16 inch frame.
Where can I buy 8×10 frames?
8×10 is one of the most common frame sizes available. You can find them at IKEA, Dunelm, The Range, Hobbycraft, Boots (photo counter), and most supermarkets. Online options include Amazon, Desenio, and specialist framing sites. They range from £3 for basic clip frames to £30+ for solid wood with museum glass.
