FRAME SIZE FOR AN A1 POSTER

A1 is the large-format exhibition size — 59.4×84.1 cm (23.39×33.11 inches). It is the standard for museum prints, architectural drawings, and promotional posters in cinemas and retail. At this scale, most people frame A1 prints without a mount — the artwork is already large enough to command the wall, and adding a mount pushes the frame size towards A0 territory. Without a mount, you need an A1 frame (59.4×84.1 cm). With a 5 cm mount border, the frame becomes 69.4×94.1 cm. Check the calculator below for your dimensions.

WHERE TO HANG AN A1 POSTER

An A1 print is a feature piece that anchors a room. It belongs above a king-size bed, over a long sofa, or on a large blank wall in an open-plan living area. The wall section should be at least 100 cm wide to give the frame breathing room. In a hallway, A1 works at the end of a corridor as a focal point — it draws the eye along the length of the space and makes the hall feel intentional rather than just a through-route. Avoid hanging A1 prints in small rooms (under 12 square metres) or above narrow furniture where the frame will overhang the edges. In a stairwell, a single A1 print on the large wall between flights works better than multiple smaller pieces. Hang it so the centre is at standing eye level from the landing.

FRAMING TIPS

A1 frames are specialist items — you are unlikely to find them in supermarkets or budget home shops. Online framing retailers and bespoke framers are your best bet. Aluminium frames are the practical choice at this size: lightweight, rigid, and usually cheaper than wood. If you want wood, choose a solid hardwood (oak, ash, walnut) rather than MDF wrapped in veneer, which can warp under the weight of large glazing. Consider acrylic glazing over glass — it halves the weight and eliminates shatter risk. UV-filtering acrylic is worth the premium if the print will receive any sunlight.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is A1 in inches?
A1 is 23.39×33.11 inches (59.4×84.1 cm). It is smaller than the US 24×36 size in both dimensions. An A1 print is about 1.5 cm narrower and 7 cm shorter than a 24×36 poster.
Is A1 bigger than 24×36?
No. A1 is 59.4×84.1 cm, while 24×36 inches is 61×91.4 cm. The 24×36 poster is both wider and taller. An A1 print will fit loosely inside a 24×36 frame, but the gap will be visible and uneven. Use the correct frame size for your print.
How heavy is a framed A1 print?
A framed A1 print with glass typically weighs 3–5 kg depending on the frame material. Wooden frames are heavier (4–5 kg), aluminium frames lighter (2.5–3.5 kg). Use appropriate wall fixings — a single picture hook rated for at least 7 kg, or two hooks spaced 20–30 cm apart for stability. On plasterboard walls, use dedicated plasterboard fixings or find a stud.
