FRAME SIZE FOR A DOUBLE CROWN POSTER

The Double Crown — 20×30 inches (50.8×76.2 cm) — is the classic British cinema poster size. Walk past any independent cinema in the UK and the posters in the display cases are almost certainly Double Crown. It is also used for music gig posters, exhibition announcements, and transport advertising. At this size, a mount is optional — the print has enough presence on its own. Without a mount, you need a 20×30 inch frame. With a 2.5-inch mount border, the frame becomes 25×35 inches. The calculator below handles any mount width.

WHERE TO HANG A DOUBLE CROWN POSTER

A Double Crown print is a statement piece that works in living rooms, home cinemas, and dedicated music or film rooms. Above a sofa, it fills the wall nicely — the 20-inch width pairs well with two-seater and three-seater sofas. In a home cinema or media room, a row of three framed Double Crown prints creates an authentic foyer atmosphere. Space them 8–10 cm apart for a clean gallery look. The format also works well in long hallways: hang a single print at the end of the corridor to create a focal point. In a bedroom, position it above the headboard for a bold feature. The wall section should be at least 70 cm wide to give the frame visual breathing room on both sides.

FRAMING TIPS

Double Crown frames are available from specialist poster and cinema memorabilia retailers. For vintage cinema posters, invest in conservation framing: acid-free mount board, UV-filtering glass, and a sealed back to keep out dust and moisture. For modern reprints, a simple black or dark grey frame with a slim moulding (20–25 mm) keeps the focus on the artwork. Snap-open frames are popular for collections you swap regularly.
