FRAME SIZE FOR A QUAD CROWN POSTER

The Quad Crown — 30×40 inches (76.2×101.6 cm) — is the iconic UK cinema advertising format, traditionally displayed in landscape orientation outside cinemas and on billboards. Collectors often frame them in portrait orientation too. At nearly a metre wide (in landscape), this is a large-format piece that dominates any wall it hangs on. Mounts are rarely used at this size — the print is already substantial enough. Without a mount, you need a 30×40 inch frame. With a 3-inch mount, the frame grows to 36×46 inches. WHERE TO HANG A QUAD CROWN POSTER

A Quad Crown print needs a large wall. In landscape orientation, it spans 40 inches (102 cm) wide — so the wall should be at least 140 cm wide for breathing room. It works best above a long sofa, over a dining table, or on a feature wall in an open-plan living space. In a home cinema, a single Quad in landscape above the screen or on the opposite wall creates a genuine cinema feel. In portrait orientation (30 inches wide, 40 inches tall), it works on narrower walls and in hallways. Ceiling height matters: you need at least 2.5 metres for a portrait-oriented Quad to hang comfortably at eye level without feeling cramped against the ceiling.

FRAMING TIPS

Quad Crown frames are specialist items — order from cinema memorabilia retailers or bespoke framers. At this size, weight is a real consideration. Aluminium frames with acrylic glazing keep the weight manageable (4–6 kg). Solid wood frames look better but can weigh 8–12 kg with glass — make sure your wall fixings can handle it. For valuable original Quad posters, linen-backing (a professional conservation technique where the poster is mounted on acid-free linen) helps flatten creases and adds structural support before framing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a Quad Crown poster?
Quad Crown (often just called "Quad") is a British cinema poster format measuring 30×40 inches (76.2×101.6 cm). It is four times the area of a Crown poster. Traditionally displayed in landscape orientation, it has been the standard UK outdoor cinema advertising format for decades.
Is a UK Quad the same as a US one-sheet?
No. A UK Quad is 30×40 inches in landscape orientation (wider than it is tall). A US one-sheet is 27×40 inches in portrait orientation. They have the same height but different widths and different orientations. They are not interchangeable in frames.
How do I frame a Quad poster in landscape?
You need a 40×30 inch frame (width first, then height). Make sure the frame is designed for landscape orientation or has adjustable hanging hardware. Use two D-rings or a wire across the back for secure landscape mounting. At this width, two wall hooks spaced 30 cm apart provide better stability than a single hook.
