Tooting doesn't do hype — it just quietly serves the best dosas south of the river while everyone argues about Brixton and Peckham.

The High Street That Feeds You

Tooting High Street and Upper Tooting Road form one of South London's great food corridors. Sri Lankan, South Indian, Pakistani, Gujarati — all within a ten-minute walk, all priced for people who actually live there rather than people who've read about it in a supplement.

Dosa n Chutny (yes, that's how they spell it) has been doing masala dosas for under a fiver since before anyone called this area "up and coming." Lahore Karahi does lamb chops that would make a Michelin inspector reconsider their career. Apollo Banana Leaf serves a banana leaf thali that's messy, loud, and exactly right.

A Community That Built Itself

Tooting's South Asian community arrived in waves — Punjabis and Pakistanis in the 1960s, Sri Lankans and South Indians through the 70s and 80s, with Gujarati families establishing businesses along the Broadway. Unlike some London neighbourhoods where the Desi presence is fading under gentrification pressure, Tooting's community is still the backbone of the area.

The sweet shops along Upper Tooting Road — Ambala, Pooja — are institutions. The sari shops are still open. The spice stores still grind fresh. This isn't preserved-in-amber nostalgia; it's a living, trading, eating community that happens to also have a Gail's bakery now.

Tooting Bec Lido

Brief aside: Tooting Bec Lido is the largest freshwater swimming pool in the UK — 91 metres long, unheated, and open year-round. South London's toughest residents swim in it in January. The rest of us go in August and still gasp when we get in. It has nothing to do with Bollywood or posters but it's worth mentioning because it's brilliant.

The Walk

Start at Tooting Bec station (Northern line), walk south along the high street through to Tooting Broadway station. It's a 15-minute walk that passes more good restaurants than most cities have in total. Then take the Northern line up to Balham (one stop) or Clapham Common (two stops) for the contrast.

Pro Tip: Go on a weekday evening. Weekends are busy and you'll queue at the best spots. Thursday night at Lahore Karahi with a mango lassi is one of South London's best-kept secrets — though we've probably just ruined that.

Is Tooting Bec the same as Tooting Broadway?

They're different tube stations about 10 minutes' walk apart, both on the Northern line. Tooting Bec is the northern end, closer to the common and the lido. Tooting Broadway is the southern end, surrounded by more of the restaurant and shopping action.

What's the best time to visit Tooting for food?

Evening, Thursday through Saturday, when the restaurants are fully firing. Lunchtime is good for the Sri Lankan and South Indian places that do thali deals. Avoid Sunday afternoon unless you enjoy queuing.
