How to do Camel Pose
An intermediate backbend pose, step by step.
- 1Kneel with your knees hip-width, shins and tops of the feet on the mat.
- 2Place your hands on your lower back, fingers pointing down.
- 3Lift the chest and press the hips forward as you begin to arch back.
- 4Keep lifting the heart, then reach the hands back to the heels if available.
- 5Let the head follow the chest back only if your neck is comfortable.
Alignment tips
- →Press the hips forward over the knees and lead with the chest, not the head.
- →Tuck the toes under to raise the heels if reaching them flat is too deep.
Common questions about Camel Pose
What does Ustrasana mean?
Ustrasana comes from ustra (camel) and asana (pose) — a kneeling backbend, the arched torso said to resemble a camel's humped shape.
What are the benefits of Camel Pose?
It opens the entire front body — chest, abdomen, hip flexors and throat — counters slouching, and can feel energising and mood-lifting.
Why do I feel dizzy in Camel Pose?
Deep backbends and dropping the head back can spike the heart rate and blood flow. Keep the chin slightly tucked, come up slowly, and rest in Child's Pose afterward.
What sizes does the Camel Pose print come in?
Three sizes: 8×12" (£19.99), 16×24" (£25.99) and 24×36" (£39.99). Every print ships unframed. Free UK shipping over £60.
