How to do Tree Pose
A beginner balance pose, step by step.
- 1Begin in Mountain Pose with your weight even on both feet.
- 2Shift your weight onto the left foot and settle your gaze on one fixed point.
- 3Place the sole of the right foot on the inner left calf or inner thigh — above or below the knee, never on it.
- 4Press the foot and standing leg into each other to engage both legs.
- 5Bring your hands to your heart, or reach them overhead like branches.
Alignment tips
- →Keep the lifted foot off the knee joint itself — above or below is safe.
- →Draw the lifted knee gently back to open the hip without twisting the pelvis.
- →Pick one unmoving point to gaze at; balance follows the eyes.
Common questions about Tree Pose
What does Vrksasana mean?
Vrksasana comes from vrksa (tree) and asana (pose) — you root one leg like a trunk and grow tall through the spine and arms.
How do I stop wobbling in Tree Pose?
Steady your gaze on one fixed point, press the lifted foot and standing leg firmly together, and spread your standing-foot toes for a wider base. A little wobble is just the ankle learning.
Where should my foot go in Tree Pose?
On the inner standing-leg calf or inner thigh — anywhere except directly on the knee. Beginners can keep the toes on the floor with the heel at the ankle (a kickstand) until the balance settles.
Is Tree Pose good for beginners?
Yes — it's one of the first balances most people learn, and it builds the ankle stability and focus that harder balances rely on.
What sizes does the Tree Pose print come in?
Three sizes: 8×12" (£19.99), 16×24" (£25.99) and 24×36" (£39.99). Every print ships unframed. Free UK shipping over £60.
