Warrior II

Virabhadrasana II

Warrior Pose II · Pronounced veer-ah-bah-DRAHS-ah-nah

Warrior II (Virabhadrasana II) is a beginner standing pose. The posture everyone pictures when they picture yoga — fierce and patient at once.

Virabhadrasana is named after Virabhadra, a fierce warrior created by the god Shiva — from vira (hero) and bhadra (friend), plus asana (pose). The “II” marks the second of three Warrior variations.

How to do Warrior II

A beginner standing pose, step by step.

  1. 1From a wide stance, turn your right foot out 90° and your left foot in slightly.
  2. 2Line up your right heel with the arch of your left foot.
  3. 3Bend your right knee toward 90°, stacking it over the ankle, the thigh working toward parallel with the floor.
  4. 4Extend your arms to shoulder height, reaching actively front and back.
  5. 5Turn your head to gaze over your front fingertips, shoulders relaxed down.

Alignment tips

  • Keep the front knee tracking over the middle toes — never let it collapse inward.
  • Press the outer edge of the back foot down to keep the back leg strong and straight.
  • Sink the hips down rather than leaning forward; keep the torso stacked over the pelvis.

Common questions about Warrior II

What does Virabhadrasana II mean?

Virabhadrasana is named after Virabhadra, a fierce warrior created by the god Shiva — from vira (hero) and bhadra (friend), plus asana (pose). The “II” marks the second of three Warrior variations.

What is Warrior II good for?

It builds strength and stamina in the legs, opens the hips and chest, and trains steady, focused breathing — which is why it's often held longer than other standing poses.

How long should I hold Warrior II?

Five slow breaths is a solid start. As the legs strengthen you can hold for a minute or more; keep the front thigh working toward parallel the whole time.

What's the difference between Warrior I, II and III?

Warrior I faces the front of the mat with hips squared and arms overhead; Warrior II opens to the side with arms parallel to the floor; Warrior III is a balance, the body horizontal on one leg.

What sizes does the Warrior II print come in?

Three sizes: 8×12" (£19.99), 16×24" (£25.99) and 24×36" (£39.99). Every print ships unframed. Free UK shipping over £60.
