How to do Headstand

An advanced inversion pose, step by step.

  1. 1Kneel and set your forearms on the mat, elbows shoulder-width apart.
  2. 2Interlace your fingers into a cup and place the crown of your head on the floor, the back of the head cradled in your hands.
  3. 3Tuck your toes, lift your hips, and walk your feet in toward your head.
  4. 4Draw your shoulders away from your ears so the weight stays in the forearms, not the neck.
  5. 5Lift one knee, then the other, into your chest before slowly extending the legs upward.

Alignment tips

  • Learn it with a teacher and against a wall first — most of the weight belongs in the forearms, not the head.
  • Engage the core and float the legs up with control instead of kicking.
  • Skip it with neck issues, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or in pregnancy unless cleared by a professional.

Common questions about Headstand

What does Sirsasana mean?

Sirsasana comes from sirsa (head) and asana (pose) — the headstand, traditionally called the “king of asanas” for its demand on balance and focus.

Is Headstand safe for beginners?

Approach it slowly and ideally with a teacher. Build shoulder strength in Dolphin Pose first, practise against a wall, and keep most of the weight in your forearms — never load the neck. Skip it with neck injuries or uncontrolled blood pressure.

How do I keep weight off my neck in Headstand?

Press the forearms firmly down and lift the shoulders away from the ears so they carry the load. The crown of the head rests lightly; it shouldn't bear your body weight.

How long should I hold a Headstand?

Start with 10–15 seconds and build gradually as strength and confidence grow. A steady neck and clean alignment matter far more than time upside down.

What sizes does the Headstand print come in?

Three sizes: 8×12" (£19.99), 16×24" (£25.99) and 24×36" (£39.99). Every print ships unframed. Free UK shipping over £60.
