How to do Shoulderstand

An intermediate inversion pose, step by step.

  1. 1Lie on your back, ideally with a folded blanket under the shoulders and the head off it.
  2. 2Bend your knees and lift your hips, supporting your back with your hands.
  3. 3Walk the hands up your back and extend the legs toward the ceiling.
  4. 4Stack the hips over the shoulders so the body comes vertical.
  5. 5Keep the weight in the shoulders and upper arms, never the neck, and gaze at the chest.

Alignment tips

  • Use a folded blanket under the shoulders to protect the neck, head on the floor.
  • Never turn the head while in the pose; come down slowly with control.
  • Learn it with a teacher and skip it with neck issues or uncontrolled blood pressure.

Common questions about Shoulderstand

What does Sarvangasana mean?

Sarvangasana comes from sarva (all), anga (limb or body) and asana (pose) — the all-limbs pose, known as Shoulderstand and traditionally called the queen of asanas.

Is Shoulderstand safe for the neck?

Only with care. Practise on a folded blanket so the neck keeps its natural curve, keep the weight in the shoulders, never turn the head, and skip it entirely with any neck injury. Learn it with a teacher.

What are the benefits of Shoulderstand?

As an inversion it shifts circulation, can feel calming and restorative, and builds shoulder and core awareness — which is why it's traditionally so prized. Always follow it with a counter-pose like Fish.

What sizes does the Shoulderstand print come in?

Three sizes: 8×12" (£19.99), 16×24" (£25.99) and 24×36" (£39.99). Every print ships unframed. Free UK shipping over £60.
