How to do Bridge Pose

A beginner backbend pose, step by step.

  1. 1Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet hip-width, heels near the seat.
  2. 2Rest your arms by your sides, palms down.
  3. 3Press into your feet and lift your hips toward the ceiling.
  4. 4Roll the shoulders under and, if you like, clasp the hands beneath your back.
  5. 5Lift the hips a little higher with each breath, chest drawing toward the chin.

Alignment tips

  • Press evenly through both feet and keep the knees hip-width, tracking over the ankles.
  • Lift from the hips and thighs rather than squeezing the glutes hard.
