Plow Pose

Halasana

Plow Pose · Pronounced hah-LAH-sah-nah

Plow Pose (Halasana) is an intermediate inversion pose. A deep, quiet fold from an inversion — long through the whole spine.

Halasana comes from hala (plow) and asana (pose) — the legs sweep overhead toward the floor, the shape of an old farming plow.

What it gives you

  • Lengthens the spine and shoulders

How to do Plow Pose

An intermediate inversion pose, step by step.

  1. 1From Shoulderstand (on a folded blanket), keep supporting your back with your hands.
  2. 2Lower your legs overhead and reach the toes toward the floor behind your head.
  3. 3If the toes reach, you can clasp the hands on the floor behind you.
  4. 4Keep lifting the hips and lengthening the spine, weight in the shoulders.
  5. 5Gaze toward the chest and breathe steadily; roll down slowly to exit.

Alignment tips

  • Practise on a folded blanket under the shoulders and keep the weight off the neck.
  • Rest the feet on a chair or bolster behind you if they don't reach the floor.
  • Never turn the head in the pose.

Common questions about Plow Pose

What does Halasana mean?

Halasana comes from hala (plow) and asana (pose) — the legs sweep overhead toward the floor, the shape of an old farming plow.

Is Plow Pose safe for beginners?

Approach it carefully and ideally after Shoulderstand with a teacher. Use a blanket under the shoulders, rest the feet on a chair if they don't reach, and avoid it with neck issues or uncontrolled blood pressure.

What does Plow Pose stretch?

The whole back body — spine, shoulders and hamstrings — and as an inversion it can feel calming. Follow it with a gentle backbend like Fish to balance the neck.

What sizes does the Plow Pose print come in?

Three sizes: 8×12" (£19.99), 16×24" (£25.99) and 24×36" (£39.99). Every print ships unframed. Free UK shipping over £60.
