How to do Pigeon Pose

An intermediate forward-fold pose, step by step.

  1. 1From Downward Dog, bring your right knee forward behind your right wrist.
  2. 2Angle the right shin under your torso, foot toward the left hip (or further forward to deepen).
  3. 3Extend your left leg straight back, the top of the foot on the mat.
  4. 4Square your hips toward the front and keep them level.
  5. 5Stay upright, or walk the hands forward and fold over the front shin.

Alignment tips

  • Slide a folded blanket under the front hip to keep the pelvis level and supported.
  • Flex the front foot to protect the knee, and keep the back leg pointing straight back.

Common questions about Pigeon Pose

What does Eka Pada Rajakapotasana mean?

Eka Pada Rajakapotasana breaks down as eka (one), pada (foot or leg), raja (king), kapota (pigeon or dove) and asana (pose) — the one-legged king pigeon, usually met as the deep hip opener Pigeon Pose.

What does Pigeon Pose stretch?

Deeply — the outer hip, glutes and piriformis of the front leg, and the hip flexor of the back leg. It's the go-to release for tight hips and a desk-bound body.

How do I protect my knee in Pigeon Pose?

Flex the front foot to engage the lower leg, keep the front shin angle comfortable rather than forcing it parallel, and support the front hip with a blanket so the weight stays even.

What sizes does the Pigeon Pose print come in?

Three sizes: 8×12" (£19.99), 16×24" (£25.99) and 24×36" (£39.99). Every print ships unframed. Free UK shipping over £60.
