How to do Pyramid Pose
An intermediate forward-fold pose, step by step.
- 1From standing, step one foot back about a leg's length, back foot turned out slightly.
- 2Square your hips toward the front of the mat.
- 3Bring your hands to your hips or into reverse prayer behind your back.
- 4Lengthen the spine, then hinge forward over the front leg from the hips.
- 5Keep both legs straight and the front-leg hip drawing back to stay square.
Alignment tips
- →Use blocks under the hands so you can fold from the hip without rounding the spine.
- →Keep a slight bend available in the front knee to protect the hamstring.
Common questions about Pyramid Pose
What does Parsvottanasana mean?
Parsvottanasana comes from parsva (side), uttana (intense stretch) and asana (pose) — an intense stretch of the side body, known in English as Pyramid Pose for its triangular shape.
What does Pyramid Pose stretch?
Mostly the hamstrings of the front leg, plus the hips, spine and — in the reverse-prayer arms — the wrists and shoulders.
Why is Pyramid harder than it looks?
Keeping the hips square while folding over a straight front leg demands real hamstring length and balance. Blocks under the hands make it accessible while that opens up.
What sizes does the Pyramid Pose print come in?
Three sizes: 8×12" (£19.99), 16×24" (£25.99) and 24×36" (£39.99). Every print ships unframed. Free UK shipping over £60.
