How to do Seated Twist

An intermediate twist pose, step by step.

  1. 1Sit in Staff Pose, then bend your right knee and step the right foot outside the left thigh.
  2. 2Bend the left knee and tuck the left foot near the right hip (or keep the left leg straight).
  3. 3Inhale and lengthen the spine tall.
  4. 4Exhale and twist toward the right, hooking the left elbow outside the right knee.
  5. 5Rest the right hand behind you and gaze over the right shoulder.

Alignment tips

  • Lengthen the spine on each inhale and deepen the twist a touch on each exhale.
  • Twist from the base of the spine upward rather than yanking with the neck.

Common questions about Seated Twist

What does Ardha Matsyendrasana mean?

Ardha Matsyendrasana comes from ardha (half) and Matsyendra, the sage known as the lord of the fishes, plus asana — the Half Lord of the Fishes, a seated spinal twist.

What are the benefits of a seated twist?

Twists mobilise the spine, stretch the back, hips and shoulders, and are traditionally said to aid digestion. They're a refreshing way to wring out tension.

How do I twist deeper in Seated Twist?

Grow the spine taller before each turn — length creates the room to rotate. Press the hand behind you down to lift, and lead the twist from the belly, not the head.

What sizes does the Seated Twist print come in?

Three sizes: 8×12" (£19.99), 16×24" (£25.99) and 24×36" (£39.99). Every print ships unframed. Free UK shipping over £60.
